Big Butterfly Count

Name, png

People across the UK are being asked to take part in an annual count of butterflies starting on the 15th July.

I was only thinking the other day that I had not seen many butterflies at all in my garden or on the country lanes when I go cycling.

The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide citizen science survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies. Over 107,000 citizen scientists took part in 2021, submitting 152,039 counts of butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK.

Big Butterfly Count could provide key research on the impact of climate change on wildlife.

Members of the public should spend 15 minutes outside counting the number and type of butterflies they see.

The annual count will take place over the next three weeks starting on the 15th July.

Packham, who is vice-president of Butterfly Conservation, said: “Biodiversity and climate crisis is an urgent issue and it can be overwhelming to think about what we can do as individuals to really make a difference.

Butterfly Conservation

“Because butterflies and moths make excellent indicators of the impacts of climate change and other human environmental factors, collecting data on their numbers is really important.

You can also download a fabulous poster to help identify the butterflies and day time moths!

Good morning

Another frosty morning today! Rain is forecast for later on so any outside work needs to be done soon.

My order from Thompson & Morgan’s seeds came today. Lots of packets of little seeds of colour and happiness. I can’t wait to get back into my greenhouse to start planting.

Racing towards Christmas!

Here we are. Another weekend. Another week nearer to Christmas.

I keep coming home from work and adding a few more decorations to the house. At the moment Z cat does not seem very interested in the tree and I have kept tinsel to a minimum this year!

I don’t think that the weather can make it’s mind up this week. It’s either wet & mild or cold and frosty. I don’t know about you but i would love a white Christmas (as long as I don’t have leave the house!)

Thursday Tales

Good morning

Another busy day today!

A bit of gardening & tidying up after Storm Arwen and the snow/frost that we had a few days ago.

My lovely Cosmos has had to be pulled up, until next year when I’ll plant some more. I’ve also ordered some lovely golden yellow ones for next year as well.

The birds are loving the berries in the garden, I keep seeing them eating all the left over grapes as well!

Lake District Memories IX

“The Earth is Art, The Photographer is only a Witness ”
Yann Arthus-Bertrand

It’s Sunday so it must be visit the Lake District day! The Lakes are steeped in history and mystery with some stunning caves, stones and more. This week the Lakes a few of the beautiful water falls – enjoy and have a great Sunday.

Moss Force (top right, bottom middle & right) can be found in Newlands Pass, above Buttermere village. Access to Moss Force is fairly easy as the waterfall is roughly 220 yards from the road between Keswick and Buttermere.

The falls are an impressive sight after rain as torrents of water plunge 100 meters below.

Aira Force

Aira Force is a beautiful waterfall located just off the banks of Ullswater. Park at the National Trust car park and follow the Gowbarrow Trail through the forest, passing Aira Force to reach the summit of Gowbarrow.

This famous waterfall has been a popular attraction for over 300 years, and has even been written about by the likes of William Wordsworth in his poem Airey-Force Valley

Rydal

Rydal Falls is situated just off the A591 between Ambleside and Grasmere. It is a ten minute walk from Rydal Mount, once home to the poet William Wordsworth.

It’s Sunday so it must be visit the Lake District day! The Lakes are steeped in history and mystery with some stunning caves, stones and more. This week we are having a look at some of the beautiful wild life that I have seen on my many visits to the Lakes.

Perhaps the most iconic of all of the wildlife that has found a sanctuary in the Lake District is the Red Squirrel. Native to the UK, its numbers have reduced significantly since the introduction of its cousin the Grey Squirrel.

The Lake District is one of the last remaining places in England where you can see the Red Squirrel with the largest population in England surviving here. You may also spot road signs alerting you to the possible presence of Red Squirrels, encouraging you to slow down!

Also, Herdwick Sheep can be found roaming freely throughout the Cumbrian fells. This iconic breed is native to Cumbria and it’s thought that 99% of the population live in within the county’s border.

The Weekend

Another busy day!

Today a bit of gardening. The cats are having a ball chasing leaves and exploring all the ‘new’ parts of the garden since I’ve cut back lots of plants!

A visit to the ever popular Living North exhibition had be drinking samples of rum, cocktails and wine at 11 o’clock in the morning! (Plus plenty of chocolate and biscuits).

The trees are looking stunning, All we needs is a huge gust of wind or a sharp front and most of the leaves will be on the floor.

More adventures tomorrow, a Textile exhibition and a Christmas Craft fair.
